Novelty Test Report V - Beer Bottles

The 4th of July is coming up and we all know what that means... American flags, country music, fireworks, and long neck bottles! If after a few drinks at the BBQ you notice Luke Bryan's voice getting a little sweeter, it may just be the 200 Hz Helmholtz resonance of all those empty bottles!

Recreating a famous test our lab performed back in 1968, we tested 221 empty glass bottles, tops open, to observe how they absorb sound. What do you think happened? Read our report to find out! RAL will be performing a series of self-sponsored tests and publishing the results for wide dissemination across the acoustics community. Send us your suggestions for our next test! We are looking to test commodity materials or systems where data is needed but does not exist due to a lack of a traditional sponsor.

The Rules:

• Test samples should be made from commodity materials, no specific acoustical product systems
  
• The tests would not have a conventional sponsor interest, so they are not likely to happen in the acoustical testing marketplace
• The results have some utility or interest to the broad acoustics community
